Tanglewood is a well established deed restricted community in the heart of Fort Myers, FL. Located just off of McGregor Boulevard just a few blocks from the Caloosahatchee River. The Tanglewood community, as well as many of the surrounding neighborhoods, are some of the more desirable neighborhoods within Fort Myers. Mature, well-established landscaping and vegetation gives this area its “old Florida” beauty. The central location and close proximity to the best that Fort Myers has to offer, also increases its desirability. Head south on McGregor Blvd to visit Fort Myers Beach or Sanibel Island; or head north toward the Edison and Henry Ford estates or to downtown Fort Myers.
Built in the 60’s by quality builder Michigan Homes, these properties have stood the test of time. Built on “non-cookie-cutter” lots, larger that what is typically built on today and are considered by many to have been constructed well past the typical building techniques of the day. These homes still look great. The community and the homes within are well-kept and many have been updated throughout the years. Tanglewood consists of single family homes, mature trees, and well-kept landscaping giving the community a Florida charm like few others.
A Brief History of Tanglewood
Before the development of the Tanglewood community, the land now comprising Tanglewood and Whiskey Creek was a potato farm owned by George Houck. George decided to sell some of the land to Michigan Homes for construction of the Tanglewood original plat in 1961. Being very involved and wanting to see the land developed “correctly”, he had insisted on being allowed to design the entrances to Tanglewood, which stand today. Throughout the next 10 years or so, Mr. Houck continued to sell parcels of his acreage one at a time to Michigan Homes to construct the four later additions to the community. After his son died, Mr. Houck decided to sell the remaining acres that comprise Whiskey Creek today. (Information provided by current resident, Ed Menninger)
Adjacent to the neighborhood is Tanglewood Elementary School where neighborhood children have convenient access to one of Lee County’s top elementary schools.
